Jet2 Flight Delayed for Hours After Boarding Stairs Strike Aircraft Wingtip in Mallorca

PALMA DE MALLORCA — Passengers travelling from Palma de Mallorca to Bristol faced several hours of disruption on Sunday, August 16, after ground equipment struck the wingtip of their Jet2 aircraft shortly before departure.

Jet2 flight LS1872, operated by a Boeing 737-800, was scheduled to depart Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) at around 10:25 a.m. local time and fly to Bristol Airport (BRS).

However, the aircraft was removed from the departure sequence after boarding stairs came into contact with its wingtip while the aircraft was being prepared for departure.

Passengers who had already boarded were subsequently asked to leave the aircraft while ground crews dealt with the incident and the aircraft was assessed.

The incident resulted in a delay of more than four hours, leaving passengers waiting at the Spanish airport considerably longer than planned.

There were no reports of injuries among passengers in connection with the incident. The aircraft had to undergo checks before the flight could continue with its journey to the United Kingdom.

The disruption highlights how even a relatively minor ground incident can have a significant knock-on effect during the busy summer travel period, particularly at popular holiday airports such as Palma de Mallorca.

Passengers affected by the delay were eventually able to continue their journey to Bristol after the necessary checks and operational arrangements had been completed.
