IndiGo in Talks to Acquire 100 Embraer Aircraft in Potential Multi-Billion-Dollar Deal
NEW DELHI – 6 November 2026
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is reportedly in advanced discussions with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer over a potential purchase of 100 regional aircraft, in what could become one of the manufacturer’s largest commercial aircraft deals.
According to a Reuters report published on 4 November, the proposed agreement could also include options for approximately 50 additional aircraft, potentially bringing the total number of aircraft under consideration to 150.
However, negotiations remain at an early stage, and there is no guarantee that an agreement will be reached. The aircraft type and final order quantity have not yet been determined.
If the deal proceeds, deliveries are expected to begin no earlier than 2030.
Embraer’s regional aircraft in the spotlight
Embraer offers several aircraft that could suit IndiGo’s regional expansion strategy.
These include the E175-E1, which can accommodate up to 88 passengers, as well as the newer E190-E2 and E195-E2 models, capable of carrying up to 114 and 146 passengers respectively.
The E2 family features newer-generation engines and improved fuel efficiency, making it an attractive option for airlines seeking to increase capacity on regional routes.
A major opportunity for Embraer in India
A successful agreement would represent a significant breakthrough for Embraer in India’s rapidly expanding aviation market.
Currently, Star Air is the only Indian airline operating Embraer commercial jets. Securing an order from IndiGo would give the Brazilian manufacturer a much stronger position in one of the world’s largest domestic aviation markets.
For IndiGo, the aircraft could provide an opportunity to expand regional connectivity, introduce additional capacity on existing routes and potentially replace some of its smaller ATR turboprop aircraft where higher passenger capacity is required.
IndiGo targets a fleet of 600 aircraft by 2030
The potential Embraer agreement comes as IndiGo continues to expand its operations.
The airline had approximately 442 aircraft in its fleet as of September 2026 and is targeting a fleet of around 600 aircraft by 2030.
Its current fleet is predominantly made up of Airbus narrowbody aircraft, alongside 44 ATR turboprops used on regional services.
An Embraer order would introduce another aircraft manufacturer into IndiGo’s fleet, potentially giving the airline greater flexibility in matching aircraft capacity to different routes.
A potential multi-billion-dollar order
According to estimates cited by Reuters, a purchase of 100 aircraft could be worth approximately US$5.1 billion after typical large-order discounts, based on JPMorgan’s assessment.
The final value would depend on the aircraft selected, the number ordered and the commercial terms negotiated between the two companies.
For now, the aviation industry will be watching closely to see whether the discussions develop into a formal agreement.
Flytechnews perspective
If finalised, the proposed agreement could reshape IndiGo’s regional fleet strategy while providing Embraer with a major opportunity to strengthen its presence in the Indian commercial aviation market.
For the Brazilian manufacturer, winning such a significant customer could also open doors to further opportunities across Asia.
