Italy Expands Reaper Fleet With Two New MQ-9A Block 5 Drones
Italy is strengthening its remotely piloted aircraft fleet after the Italian Air Force ordered two additional MQ-9A Block 5 Reapers from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI).
The order, announced on 8 September 2026, will expand Italy’s existing MQ-9A fleet, with the two new aircraft scheduled for delivery by the end of 2027. The acquisition is being conducted through a U.S. Foreign Military Sale (FMS) and also includes Ground Control Stations.
Built for long-endurance surveillance
The MQ-9A Block 5 is designed for long-duration Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. According to GA-ASI, the aircraft can remain airborne for up to 26 hours and operate at altitudes of up to 45,000 feet (13,716 metres).
The aircraft can carry a payload of up to 4,600 pounds (2,087 kg), including external stores, and can be equipped with advanced sensors including Full-Motion Video, Synthetic Aperture Radar and Moving Target Indicator/Maritime Radar. It also features automatic take-off and landing capabilities.
Mediterranean and NATO missions
Italy has been operating MQ-9 aircraft for more than two decades, using the platform to support surveillance missions over Italian territory and the Mediterranean, as well as operations supporting NATO.
GA-ASI President David R. Alexander described Italy as an important long-term partner and highlighted the Italian Air Force's continued use of the MQ-9A across a wide range of ISR missions.
The latest purchase represents another step in Italy's effort to maintain and expand its persistent airborne surveillance capabilities.
With delivery planned for late 2027, the additional Reapers will give the Italian Air Force greater capacity for monitoring large areas and supporting allied operations.
The skies over the Mediterranean are about to gain two more eyes.
