Singapore Airlines Flight Returns to Changi After Hydraulic System Issue
SINGAPORE – A Singapore Airlines flight bound for the United States made a precautionary return to Singapore Changi Airport after the crew detected a technical issue involving the aircraft’s hydraulic system shortly after takeoff.
Flight SQ22, operating from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) on August 12, was being flown by an Airbus A350-900ULR, one of the airline’s ultra-long-range aircraft used on the nearly 19-hour nonstop journey.
According to Singapore Airlines, the flight crew identified the hydraulic system issue shortly after departure and, in line with standard safety procedures, elected to return to Singapore. The aircraft landed safely without incident, and all passengers disembarked normally.
The airline arranged a replacement Airbus A350-900ULR to continue the journey, allowing affected passengers to resume their trip to Newark after the aircraft change. Singapore Airlines also provided assistance to travelers during the delay and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
Singapore Airlines reiterated that the safety of its customers and crew remains its highest priority, emphasizing that returning to the departure airport is a routine precaution whenever a technical issue is detected that requires further inspection.
While the disruption delayed one of the world’s longest nonstop commercial flights, the incident highlights the aviation industry’s safety-first approach, with flight crews trained to make precautionary decisions whenever potential technical concerns arise.
No injuries were reported, and the affected aircraft was taken for inspection and maintenance before returning to service.
