Sydney Airport Chaos: Over 100 Flights Delayed as Air Traffic Control Staff Shortages Bite

SYDNEY – Thousands of travellers faced major disruptions at Sydney Airport (SYD) after air traffic control staffing shortages triggered delays and cancellations affecting more than 100 flights.

Australia’s busiest airport experienced significant operational challenges as reduced air traffic control capacity forced airlines to delay departures and arrivals throughout the day. Passengers reported waiting for several hours, with long queues forming at terminals as schedules unraveled.

Among the airlines impacted were Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Rex Airlines, and Air New Zealand, with both domestic and international services affected. Some flights were cancelled outright, while others were delayed by several hours.

Airport authorities and Airservices Australia worked to manage the disruption, citing staffing shortages within air traffic control as the primary cause. Airlines advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and offered rebooking options where necessary.

Operations gradually returned to normal later in the day as additional staffing became available, although some knock-on delays continued into the evening.

The incident highlights the growing pressure on aviation infrastructure as airlines continue to operate busy post-pandemic schedules while the industry grapples with workforce shortages in key operational roles.

Travellers are encouraged to monitor airline notifications and allow extra time when flying, particularly during peak travel periods.
