Qantas Launches Historic First Direct Flight from Perth to Johannesburg
Qantas has marked a significant milestone in its international network with the launch of its inaugural direct flight from Perth to Johannesburg, creating a new non-stop bridge between Western Australia and South Africa.
Flight QF65 departed Perth Airport to applause and celebration, symbolising a long-awaited expansion of Qantas’ Africa connectivity. The new service cuts travel time by several hours compared to previous one-stop options through Sydney or other international hubs, offering travellers a faster and more convenient route for both business and leisure.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating the route features Qantas’ latest long-haul cabin, including upgraded inflight entertainment, enhanced Wi-Fi, and improved passenger comfort designed for ultra-long-haul journeys. The route will initially operate three times weekly, with the airline saying frequency may increase subject to demand.
Western Australia’s tourism sector has welcomed the launch, noting that the direct service is expected to attract more visitors from South Africa while strengthening trade, family ties, and corporate travel links between the continents. For Johannesburg, the route offers a new gateway for travellers heading to Australia’s west coast, mining regions, and top tourism destinations such as Margaret River, Rottnest Island, and Broome.
Qantas Group executives described the milestone as a “new chapter” in the airline’s global strategy, adding that the Perth–Johannesburg connection supports ongoing efforts to expand long-haul operations from the Perth hub.
As the inaugural flight touched down in Johannesburg, aviation enthusiasts and passengers alike celebrated what many hope will become one of Qantas’ most successful intercontinental routes.
