Europe Faces Major Travel Turmoil as Over 245 Flights Cancelled and 1,298 Delayed
Europe’s air travel network was thrown into disarray today as more than 245 flights were cancelled and 1,298 delayed across multiple countries, including Ireland, Portugal, France, the UK, and Iceland. A combination of operational disruptions, adverse weather, and staffing shortages forced several airlines to ground or significantly delay services at major hubs.
Airlines EasyJet, HOP, Emerald Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, and several regional carriers were amongst those most heavily affected. Passengers travelling through key airports such as Edinburgh, Helsinki, Madrid, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Dublin reported long queues, last-minute gate changes, and delays extending well into the evening.
At Edinburgh Airport, dozens of flights were axed as airlines struggled to reset schedules after a wave of crew availability issues. Dublin Airport, one of the hardest-hit hubs, dealt with widespread knock-on delays as weather conditions deteriorated across parts of Western Europe. Meanwhile in Helsinki, Finnair faced a cascade of disruptions, affecting both domestic and long-haul departures.
Industry analysts say Europe’s aviation sector is once again feeling pressure from winter weather patterns and ongoing staffing gaps, particularly within ground handling and air traffic control teams. Airports in Portugal and France reported pockets of ATC-related delays, adding to the congestion.
Travellers were urged to check airline apps frequently and expect longer processing times. Some passengers were offered rebooking options extending several days out, underscoring the scale of the operational strain.
With weather forecasts remaining unstable and crew rosters stretched, airlines warn that delays could persist into the coming days.
