Istanbul Airport Set to Open Fourth Runway as Traffic Continues to Soar

ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Istanbul Airport is set to inaugurate its fourth main runway on September 18, further strengthening the airport’s position as one of Europe’s most important aviation hubs.

The new 2,820-metre east-west runway will join Istanbul Airport’s existing three main runways and two backup runways, giving the airport additional operational flexibility as passenger and aircraft movements continue to increase.

The additional runway is expected to help improve take-off and landing capacity, reduce congestion and increase operational efficiency, particularly during busy periods. Istanbul Airport has rapidly established itself as a major international connecting hub between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The runway opening comes as European airports face growing demand for air travel and increasing pressure to expand capacity. For airlines using Istanbul as a connecting point, the additional infrastructure could provide greater flexibility in scheduling and aircraft movements.

The September 18 opening marks another major step in Istanbul Airport’s expansion and its ambition to remain one of Europe’s leading aviation hubs.
