Spanish carrier Air Europa is set to expand its long-haul network with the launch of new direct flights between Madrid and Johannesburg, marking its long-awaited entry into the South African market.

The new route, expected to begin operations in mid-2026, will be operated using the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, offering passengers a blend of modern comfort, efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.

According to Air Europa, the addition of Johannesburg strengthens its strategy to increase its presence in Africa and connect more destinations to its Madrid hub. The route will provide seamless onward connections to major European cities such as London, Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam, as well as convenient links to Latin America.

“South Africa represents an important destination both for tourism and business travel. This new route underlines our commitment to connecting continents through efficient and sustainable operations,” said Air Europa CEO Richard Clark.

The service is expected to operate four times per week, with flight schedules designed to complement existing routes to other African destinations like Dakar and Lagos.

Aviation analysts say the move positions Air Europa to compete more directly with European rivals such as Iberia, Lufthansa, and Air France, all of which have strong presences on the Europe–Africa corridor.

The launch will also mark Air Europa’s first scheduled service to sub-Saharan Africa, further expanding the airline’s global footprint following its integration into the IAG Group, which also owns British Airways and Iberia.
