SA-Developed Drone to Shine at G20 Summit
South Africa’s rapidly growing defence and technology sector is set to take centre stage at the upcoming G20 Summit, where a locally developed drone system will be showcased as one of the event’s key innovations.
The unmanned aerial system (UAS), named the AeroSentinel X9, was designed by a Johannesburg-based aerospace startup in collaboration with the CSIR and several university engineering departments. The drone has already attracted international interest for its advanced surveillance capabilities, autonomous navigation, and ultra-light composite build.
According to officials involved in the G20 preparations, the AeroSentinel X9 will be used to support security monitoring, crowd management, and rapid-response coordination throughout the summit. Its cutting-edge sensor suite—featuring thermal imaging, AI-driven threat detection, and encrypted real-time data links—positions it as one of the most capable drones produced on the African continent.
Project lead engineer Lebo Maseko said the team is honoured to have their innovation showcased:
“Being selected for the G20 is a milestone for South African engineering. It proves we can develop world-class aerospace technology that competes on a global scale.”
The drone is also expected to be demonstrated to several delegations exploring new surveillance and disaster-management tools, potentially opening the door for export contracts and international partnerships.
With the G20 set to highlight sustainability, security, and technological cooperation, South Africa’s AeroSentinel X9 stands as a powerful example of home-grown innovation ready for the world stage.
