A new chapter in ultra long-haul travel begins!
A major milestone has been reached in the future of ultra long-haul travel, as Qantas has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-1000ULR to enter the next phase of development under the airline’s ambitious Project Sunrise program.
The aircraft was rolled out of the production facility in Toulouse this week, marking a significant step forward in bringing non-stop intercontinental travel closer to reality. Now equipped with state-of-the-art Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the jet will begin a series of final ground checks before embarking on an intensive two-month flight testing campaign.
Project Sunrise is one of the most ambitious commercial aviation initiatives in recent years. It is designed to enable non-stop flights from Sydney to global hubs such as London and New York City—routes that are expected to exceed 20 hours in duration. If successful, these flights will eliminate the need for stopovers, significantly reducing total travel time while redefining passenger convenience.
To support these ultra long-haul operations, the A350-1000ULR will feature a specially configured cabin focused on comfort and wellbeing. This includes lower passenger capacity, dedicated wellness zones, improved lighting systems to reduce jet lag, and enhanced crew rest facilities—critical for such extended journeys.
The upcoming flight testing phase will be crucial in validating the aircraft’s performance, fuel efficiency, and onboard systems under real-world conditions.
