Flydubai Boeing 737 MAX Diverts to Saudi Arabia After Violent Cockpit Incident

A Flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency diversion to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a violent incident involving the flight crew.

Flight FZ1073 was operating from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport when an altercation broke out in the cockpit. According to reports from Israeli officials and international media, the co-pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed the captain before attempting to take control of the aircraft.

The situation resulted in a dramatic loss of altitude. Flight-tracking data showed the Boeing 737 descending by roughly 14,000 feet in around 30 seconds, prompting serious concerns about the safety of the aircraft and its passengers.

The aircraft transmitted emergency signals, including the international 7500 code used to indicate unlawful interference or a possible hijacking. The alert triggered a major security response, including the scrambling of Israeli fighter aircraft as authorities initially feared the aircraft could have been hijacked.

Passengers and other crew members reportedly intervened during the incident, helping to restrain the attacker and regain control of the aircraft. Two off-duty pilots travelling as passengers were also reported to have assisted with the flight.

The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Reports indicate that the aircraft’s rudder was damaged during the incident, although the full circumstances surrounding the damage remain under investigation.

Flydubai confirmed that the aircraft experienced an incident while operating the Dubai–Tel Aviv service and that passengers were safely accounted for. The airline subsequently arranged another aircraft to transport passengers onward from Saudi Arabia.

The incident is now the subject of an investigation involving authorities in Saudi Arabia and Israel. The alleged attacker’s identity and motive have not been fully established publicly, and officials have differed in their descriptions of the incident as investigations continue.

The dramatic emergency highlights the importance of cockpit security and crew-response procedures, particularly when an incident occurs during flight. Despite the severe disruption and reported injuries to members of the flight crew, the aircraft was brought safely to the ground with the passengers accounted for.

Flytechnews will continue to follow this developing story as more verified information becomes available.
