American Airlines Could Bring Starlink to Boeing 737, 777 and 787 Jets
FORT WORTH, TEXAS — American Airlines could be preparing to significantly expand its Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi plans, potentially bringing SpaceX’s high-speed satellite internet to its Boeing 737, 777 and 787 fleets.
The reported expansion would go beyond American’s officially announced Starlink programme, which currently covers more than 500 Airbus narrowbody aircraft. Installations on those Airbus aircraft are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
According to reports from aviation sources, American now appears to be considering Starlink for its Boeing 737, 777 and 787 aircraft as well. However, American Airlines has not yet officially confirmed the Boeing expansion, meaning the plans could still change.
If confirmed, the move would represent a major expansion of American’s connectivity strategy. The Boeing 737 is one of the airline’s most important aircraft families for domestic flying, while the Boeing 777 and 787 are heavily used on long-haul international routes.
Starlink could provide passengers with faster and lower-latency internet, supporting activities such as streaming video, browsing, online gaming, video meetings and real-time messaging. American has described Starlink as capable of delivering an “at-home” style Wi-Fi experience in the air.
The airline already offers Wi-Fi through several connectivity providers, so the potential Starlink expansion would not mean Boeing aircraft currently lack internet. Instead, it could introduce a more consistent satellite connectivity platform across a much larger portion of American’s mainline fleet.
American’s original announcement focused on more than 500 Airbus aircraft, including existing A320-family jets as well as new A321neo and A321XLR deliveries.
The reported addition of the Boeing 737, 777 and 787 would therefore be significant, potentially extending Starlink from American’s narrowbody Airbus operation into both domestic Boeing aircraft and its long-haul widebody fleet.
For passengers, the biggest impact could be the ability to remain connected more consistently throughout a journey — whether travelling across the United States or on a long-haul international flight.
For now, however, the Boeing portion remains unconfirmed. American Airlines has officially announced the Airbus Starlink rollout beginning in 2027, while the reported Boeing expansion awaits formal confirmation from the airline.
Flytechnews will continue to follow developments as American Airlines moves toward its next generation of in-flight connectivity.
