Qantas Issues Full Refund After Passenger Hit by Vomit During Taxi
Australia’s flagship carrier Qantas has reversed its initial stance after a passenger who was struck by vomit from another traveler during taxi to the runway successfully secured a full refund.
The unusual incident occurred on a domestic service departing from Sydney, as the aircraft was taxiing for takeoff. According to reports, a passenger seated several rows ahead became unwell and vomited unexpectedly, with some of it landing on a fellow traveler seated behind.
The affected passenger said cabin crew responded by providing paper towels and relocating them to another available seat once the aircraft reached cruising altitude. However, they claimed the situation left them distressed and uncomfortable for the remainder of the journey.
Initially, Qantas reportedly declined to issue a refund, offering instead a travel credit as a gesture of goodwill. The passenger escalated the complaint, arguing that the experience constituted a significant service failure, particularly given the hygiene and health implications.
Following further review, Qantas reversed its decision and issued a full refund for the ticket. In a statement, the airline apologised for the incident and acknowledged that the circumstances fell short of the experience customers should expect.
Aviation analysts note that while onboard medical or sickness-related events are not uncommon, incidents affecting nearby passengers can present operational and customer service challenges. Airlines are generally expected to manage such disruptions sensitively, particularly when they impact passenger wellbeing.
The case has sparked discussion online about airline responsibility during in-flight hygiene incidents and the level of compensation passengers should receive when circumstances beyond their control affect their journey.
For Qantas, the swift policy reversal may help contain reputational damage, reinforcing the importance of responsive customer service in an era where passenger experiences can quickly gain traction on social media.
