Sun PhuQuoc Airways Orders Up to 40 Boeing 787-9s in $22.5 Billion Long-Haul Ambition
Vietnam’s newest aviation start-up, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, has unveiled an ambitious plan to become a major long-haul international carrier after signing for up to 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in a deal valued at approximately $22.5 billion at list prices.
The agreement with Boeing marks one of the most significant widebody commitments by a Vietnamese start-up in recent years and signals strong confidence in Vietnam’s expanding global travel market. The 787-9, known for its fuel efficiency and extended range, will form the backbone of the airline’s planned long-haul operations connecting Vietnam to key destinations across Europe, North America, and potentially Australia.
Sun PhuQuoc Airways aims to position itself as a premium international carrier, leveraging Vietnam’s growing tourism appeal and its strategic location in Southeast Asia. Phu Quoc Island, already a fast-developing resort hub, is expected to serve as a central gateway for the airline’s operations.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner offers a range of approximately 7,600 nautical miles and typically seats between 250 and 290 passengers, making it well-suited for intercontinental routes. Its lower fuel burn and passenger-focused cabin features have made it a popular choice among airlines expanding long-haul fleets.
While delivery timelines and firm versus option allocations have not yet been fully disclosed, the order underscores the broader momentum within Vietnam’s aviation sector, which continues to see rapid growth in both inbound tourism and outbound travel demand.
If successfully executed, Sun PhuQuoc Airways’ bold fleet strategy could reshape Vietnam’s long-haul connectivity and intensify competition with established regional and global carriers.
