Melbourne Airport Launches Landmark A$4.5 Billion International Terminal Overhaul

Melbourne Airport has announced an ambitious A$4.5 billion expansion project aimed at transforming its international operations and preparing for a new era of global growth.

Major Capacity Boost

At the heart of the project is a large-scale expansion of Terminal 2, the airport’s main international gateway. Plans include additional boarding gates, expanded check-in areas, next-generation security screening technology, and a redesigned arrivals hall to streamline passenger flows.

Airport officials say the upgrade will substantially increase annual passenger capacity, positioning Melbourne to handle future traffic growth as Australia strengthens trade and tourism links across Asia, North America, and the Middle East.

Future-Ready Infrastructure

The redevelopment will also include airfield enhancements to support more widebody aircraft movements, improved taxiways, and sustainability-focused design features aimed at reducing emissions and boosting energy efficiency.

Melbourne Airport leadership described the project as a “once-in-a-generation” transformation that will create thousands of jobs during construction while reinforcing Victoria’s status as a key aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Strengthening Global Connectivity

The expansion comes amid strong recovery in international travel and growing airline interest in adding new long-haul routes. With upgraded facilities and increased gate capacity, the airport expects to attract additional services from global carriers and support expanded frequencies on existing routes.

Construction timelines are expected to be phased to minimise disruption to ongoing airport operations.
