Lufthansa Group orders ten Airbus and ten Boeing long-haul aircraft

Deutsche Lufthansa AG is continuing its major fleet renewal strategy with the approval of 20 additional next-generation long-haul aircraft. The airline group will acquire ten Airbus A350-900 jets and ten Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with deliveries expected between 2032 and 2034.

CEO Carsten Spohr said the investment highlights the group’s long-term commitment to operating a modern, premium-quality fleet while further lowering carbon emissions. He noted that the latest-generation aircraft are significantly more fuel-efficient, quieter, and environmentally friendly than the older models they will eventually replace.

The new Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s are expected to gradually phase out less efficient aircraft from 2032 onward. Lufthansa has not yet confirmed which airlines within the group or which hubs will operate the new jets.

The expansion is also expected to improve operational efficiency through greater fleet standardization, reducing maintenance complexity, operating costs, and increasing flexibility across the network. Additional benefits are anticipated in crew training, licensing, and spare parts management.

With this latest commitment, the Lufthansa Group now has 232 new aircraft on order, including 107 next-generation widebody jets, marking one of the largest modernization programs in the company’s history.
