Ethiopian Airlines Nears Decision on 25-Aircraft Regional Fleet Expansion
ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Airlines is expected to make a final decision within the next three months on a significant fleet expansion program that could see the carrier acquire 25 new regional aircraft, according to Mesfin Tasew Bekele.
The planned acquisition forms part of the airline’s long-term strategy to strengthen its regional network across Africa and meet growing demand for air travel on short- and medium-haul routes. The new aircraft are expected to enhance connectivity between major cities and underserved destinations, supporting economic growth and tourism across the continent.
According to Bekele, the airline is currently evaluating several aircraft types before making a final selection. The contenders include the Airbus A220, Embraer E2 family, and the Boeing 737 MAX 7. The Boeing option remains subject to certification by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, with approval expected later this year.
The potential order would represent one of the largest regional fleet expansion initiatives undertaken by an African airline in recent years. Industry observers believe the selected aircraft will play a key role in supporting Ethiopian Airlines’ growth strategy, offering improved fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and enhanced passenger comfort.
Ethiopian Airlines has continued to expand its fleet and route network, maintaining its position as Africa’s largest airline by destinations served and fleet size. The addition of 25 regional aircraft would further strengthen the carrier’s ability to connect emerging markets while improving operational flexibility across its network.
Industry analysts say the move reflects growing confidence in Africa’s aviation sector, where rising passenger demand and increasing regional connectivity needs are driving airlines to invest in modern aircraft.
An official announcement on the aircraft selection and order details is expected once the evaluation process is completed in the coming months.
