Qantas Group Plans Major Australia-Indonesia Expansion as New Bali and Jakarta Flights Take Shape
SYDNEY — Qantas Airways is preparing a major expansion of its Australia–Indonesia network, with the airline group planning to add new services linking several Australian cities with Jakarta and Bali.
The proposed expansion comes as Australia and Indonesia increase the number of flights permitted between the two countries under an updated air services agreement, creating additional opportunities for airlines to grow their international networks.
Qantas is planning a new Perth–Jakarta service, strengthening connectivity between Western Australia and the Indonesian capital. The airline group is also looking at additional Melbourne–Jakarta flights, giving travellers more options between the two major cities.
Meanwhile, Qantas’ low-cost subsidiary Jetstar is expected to play an important role in expanding capacity to Bali. Proposed services include flights between Brisbane and Bali, as well as a new connection between Western Sydney International Airport and Bali.
The Western Sydney–Bali proposal would be particularly significant, providing the new airport with another international route and giving passengers in Sydney’s west a direct alternative to travelling to Sydney’s existing Kingsford Smith Airport.
Bali remains one of the most popular international holiday destinations for Australian travellers, while Jakarta is an important gateway for business, tourism and onward connections across Indonesia.
The planned expansion highlights the growing importance of the Australia–Indonesia aviation market. Increased capacity rights are allowing airlines to consider additional routes and frequencies as demand for travel between the two countries continues to strengthen.
For passengers, the additional services could mean more flight choices, greater connectivity and potentially more competitive fares across some of Australia’s busiest Indonesia routes.
The proposed Qantas and Jetstar expansion is expected to further strengthen the airline group’s position in the Australia–Indonesia market while supporting the growth of international operations at both Perth and Western Sydney.
Flytechnews will continue to follow developments as Qantas and Jetstar finalise their plans for the new services.
